What is a Co-op?

What is a Co-op?

Membership Application Process

Who Can Join CAIC?

In order to join CAIC you must be an incorporated, registered charity that shares the common goal of investing in socially responsible investments. CAIC cannot accept individual members. CAIC is a cooperative and therefore is an organization that is owned by its members. A co-op operates on a democratic system that specifies “one member, one vote”. This ensures that all members of the co-op have an equal say in how the co-op is run. Check out our What is a Co-op? page for further information on what it means to be a member of a cooperative.

How Do I Join CAIC?

The first step in joining CAIC is to contact the office and request a 'Membership Kit' that includes two sample forms: an 'Extract from Minutes of the Meeting of Directors' and information 'with Respect to Each of the Members'. Both forms need to be sent with an accompanying letter expressing interest in joining. Members joining CAIC must purchase shares in the cooperative ($10 each) and are expected to make an investment in one or both of two funds - Social Mortgage Fund and the Community Venture Fund. Membership requests are reviewed and approved by the CAIC board.

For more information on the benefits of membership in CAIC contact:
